This weekend’s episode of Living Lohan on E! featured what it seemed like the show was going to be about initially – what life is like as a Lohan.
While Ali is working on her music and career, the reality is that because she still goes to school like any other wealthy 14 year old, she gets teased and has to deal with a lot than any other wealthy 14 year old because of her sister Lindsay’s celebrity. Tonight, the show gave an example of how her sister’s celebrity has affected the teenager’s life as some “Mean Girls” from Ali’s high school told Ali to “stop trying to be like your sister” and asked if her if she was “going to rehab” like her older sister and role model.
, the movie that truly broke Lindsay Lohan into super stardom, when referring to these girls who say malicious things to Ali in school.
Ali handled it all well, but this was definitely the most interesting thing that the show has covered so far, much like when Keeping Up with the Kardashians talked about their relationship with their late father. I think that we’ve all come to grips with the idea that reality TV is more semi-scripted reality TV than anything, but there are some glimpses of reality in there that help us understand these people that fill our DVRs every week.
Although Ali was the only White girl there and looked a little out of place in what looked to be more of an urban program, she found some clarity at a performing arts program called IMPACT – despite being followed by a small gang of paparazzi upon arrival. I don’t think that this will become a regular part of her life, but it would definitely make for good TV to see Ali become a part of the IMPACT community, which looked to be all African-American and much more gospel and hip-hop oriented than you’d think Ali is at first glance.
It was kind of cool that Dina brought Ali there, but unfortunately, I’m almost positive that her involvement with the program for positivity through the arts will be a one time thing on the show.
Next week, Michael Lohan Jr., Lindsay’s younger brother and Ali’s older brother, comes home with his girlfriend. Michael Lohan was in high school while Lindsay was reaching her peaks of superstardom, so he’s more than familiar with life as a Lohan as we know it.
Seeing as Ali has thrust herself into the paparazzis’ eyes as made obvious by the throngs of paparazzi that followed her around in tonight’s episode, it will be interesting to see how Michael handles being just a guy in college who has one of the most well-known faces on the planet as a sister.
We’re still waiting on a Lindsay sighting on the show, but clearly, her influence on the family is something that will be felt regardless of if there is a cameo this season.
Tonight, the much talked about premiere of Living Lohan, a Maloof/Lohan venture, finally aired on E!. Along with Ryan Seacrest’s new show Denise Richards: It’s Complicated, E! has a whole new lineup of reality based shows to fill the spots normally taken by Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Pop Fiction (is this still on?) during the offseason.
Instead of showing reruns, E! gets to keep showing Super New shows year round. Brilliant!
Despite my love for anything pop culture, I actually had very little idea about what Living would be about. Since she’s clearly out of my target demo, Ali Lohan, a 14 year old girl, was largely unknown to me. I knew that Dina Lohan played mom and manager to the girls, but I really didn’t know much about Ali and her singing/acting career.
Was this another Kardashians ? Or would this simply be hype for all of the upcoming Lohan projects?
What I got was something that was very different. It was a little intense at times, but it felt very real watching Mama Lohan try to manage one of Hollywood’s most sought after and hunted families. From checking the tabloids for the newest stories on Lindsay to trying to keep up with her daughter Ali’s next album release, the show looks like it will focus heavily on Dina Lohan trying to keep up with her daughters’ careers more than it will look at the family members’ relationships with one another (like Keeping).
While Chris Kardashian, Kim’s mother, plays a much calmer, nice manager/mom, Dina Lohan is all about business. Since Lindsay has been “in the biz” for so many years now, Dina is clearly media savvy and unafraid of anything that the paparazzi and tabloids will throw at her and her family. She has a sharp tongue, but I don’t think that it’s overdone at all. If you’ve ever worked in a talent management office, you have an understanding of how intense some of these conversations can get. When your daughter and biggest client is Lindsay Lohan, one of Hollywood’s biggest names, it just gets that much bigger.
This week’s episode focused on Ali’s singing career and pending second full album, which is also being produced by the Maloof brothers. While Ali is only 14 years old, she’s no doubt grown up quicker, but seems to lack some of the more smiley, innocent niceness that Lindsay had at a comparable age. It will definitely be interesting to see Ali at school to see what her “regular life” is like. Ali, like her mom, is very direct and speaks with a noticeable New York accent that hasn’t yet been tamed by the Hollywood scene.
While picking out tracks for her new album from producer and trusted new family friend Jeremy Greene, the family stumbled upon a blog rumor that Jeremy was dating sister Lindsay. Judging from the dates of the rumor, the show was shot in late January, early February, which is actually fairly recently for a reality show.
One Google search later, Jeremy went from the family’s favorite producer to a potential liar that could be piggybacking off the family’s notoriety and fame.
Living Lohan has the potential to be a decent show. While I don’t think that I necessarily am as interested in Ali’s life as I am the Kardashians’, it’s definitely interesting to watch Dina Lohan try and shape her daughter’s career having already been through one family superstar. As Ali’s 14 year old career grows, so will the rumor mill and challenges that await the family.
Living Lohan is a nice change of pace and actually feels fairly real because you can feel all the stresses that come with being part of the family, but really, people are just wondering if Lindsay is going to make a cameo at some point in the season.
It’s late Spring/early Summer and that means that it’s List Season in the entertainment world. I wanted to recap some of the hottest lists of this magical, make-believe pseudo season to get all of us who try to remain cool up to speed on who still seems to matter in our fickle (yet beloved) entertainment world.
First up, Maxim’s Hot 100 for 2008 – a list that I find a little bizarre, but I suppose that’s because I’m more of a fan of “beautiful” than hot. I’m more of a Jenna Fischer guy than I ever was a Pamela Anderson guy, if that makes sense.
Here’s how Maxim rounded out their Top 10 on what I believe to be a very wacky Top 10 this year:
10) Ashley Tisdale- Kicking off the completely bizarre nature of this year’s Top 10 is the inclusion of High School Musical and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody cast member Ashley Tisdale. The Disney teen queen is definitely a good looking girl, but something still feels dirty about calling her one of the hottest girls in the game right now. Beyond that, Tisdale is no where near as hot as other young Hollywood types like Brittany Snow (#93) or Minka Kelly (#54).
9) Lindsay Lohan – It’s hard to believe after the train wreck that has been the past year or so in LiLo’s career, but Lindsay once topped this list. I think that the big question with Lindsay Lohan nowadays is, “Does anyone care anymore?” Many of us were all aboard the Lohan Express during a period of celebrity overload that included a constant, daily barrage of Paris, Britney, and Lindsay, but #9 seems a little high for the fallen Queen Bee. I still have love for Lindsay, but when her Mean Girls co-star Lacey Chabert is way down at #90, it feels like Lindsay might have gotten a little boost from her former pwn@ge of this very list.
8: Christina Aguilera – Maxim put the new mom and former Dirrty pop princess a little high on the list. I’ve never been a huge fan of Christina Aguilera in terms of the hotness factor, so I would disagree with this no matter what, but she was my favorite singer of those Spears/Aguilera/Simpson/Moore days (ah, how I miss those simpler days). Mama Xtina? Not Top 10 material, but “Come on Over” Christina would have fit in just fine at #8.
7) Eva Mendes – Here’s one where I literally just stare at the screen and make a confused expression. Isn’t Eva Mendes a little “two years ago” (if not more?). So yes, you see her boobs in Training Day and she’s pretty cool in Hitch, but I feel like the luster has worn off. When Mendes gets a Top 10 spot, while hotties like Kristen Bell (#55) and even perennial hottie Jessica Alba (#34)are far below her, something’s not right.
#55, really?
6) Elisha Cuthbert – Finally, one that I’m pretty ok with in the Top 10. While Cuthbert wouldn’t crack my own personal Top 10, there’s something about her that is always screaming “very, very hot.” She’s beautiful in a somewhat unconventional way and achieves that despite being a good looking, hot, white, blonde girl. So bravo on this one, Maxim.
5) Sarah Michelle Gellar – Here’s another one that seems a little late to be ranked this high. I thought that it was a little weird when TAFKA Buffy was on the cover of Maxim earlier this year, but then it’s even more weird to see her come in at #5 on this year’s list. She’s a really pretty girl, but significantly less relevant and yes, less hot than she was five years ago. Heroes co-star Hayden Panettiere (#13)is way more “it girl” than SMG, along with the definition of dirty girl hotness Megan Fox (#16). SMG is one of those that is rightfully included on the list, but way too high.
4) Eva Longoria Parker – I’m split on this one because I’ve actually had the pleasure of meeting ELP this past year and I can say that she is absolutely stunning in real life. However, Miss Longoria Parker is much more beautiful than she is hot. I realize that a lot of this is likely because her character on Desperate Housewives is a lot less sexualized this past season. She’s one of the most beautiful women in the world, but #4 seems a little high for her, though it’s really tough to find many who are more beautiful than she in lower slots on the list.
3) Jessica Biel – This shoe fits juuuuust right. The former 7th Heaven star not only has one of the hottest bodies in Hollywood, but has a beautiful face to go along with it. While there are many “Butterfaces” in the game nowadays, Biel is pretty much the total package of hotness. Athletic, glamorous when she needs to be, but with a hot tomboy factor that comes across no matter what, #3 is a fitting spot for the girl who made everyone freeze and take notice with her GEAR Magazine shoot many years ago .
2) Scarlett Johansson – One of my personal favorites, Johansson’s #2 spot is also perfect for one of the most beautiful women on the planet. Not only did a date with the busty (but classy!) blonde go $40,100 on eBay this past year, confirming her universal desirability on the Internetz with guys with a lot of time and money on their hands (and some other things, ew), but she continues to make statements like these about her boobs that make the recently engaged hottie one of the most desirable, all around hottest girls in the world.
1) Marisa Miller – Miller becomes Maxim’s first ever supermodel to take the top spot on the Hot 100 and it’s really hard to argue with the choice. Marisa is Victoria Secret’s Queen Bee (take that, Gisele) and has been in every Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition for the past six years or so. Beautiful, not so pop culture, so it’s an interesting choice (as they always have to be at #1), but I can’t really say that I’m not ok with one of the most beautiful women in the world getting the top spot.
Some notable omissions:
- Carrie Underwood (the most beautiful musician in the world in my opinion)
- Amanda Bynes (#46): A pleasant surprise to see Bynes make the top half of the list!
- Stacy Keibler (#89): Who knows what the former WWE Diva will do for a career, but she’s definitely one of the most beautiful women around (and the most leggy!).
- Natasha Bedingfield (#72): This Pocket Full of Sunshine has an unconventional beauty and style that should make her a staple on all “pretay” lists.
- Minka Kelly (#54): The Friday Night Lights beauty is a walking Neutrogena commercial.
I know that this has been going on for about a month now, but I have to say that the YouTube dance battle (Known as “The Biggest Dance Battle in the History of Mankind”) between Step Up 2 the Streets director Jon M. Chu
and Hannah Montana’s Miley Cyrusferris bueller s day off divx movie online (with her friend Mandy) has got to be one of the most entertaining things on the Internet right now.
Jon’s crew is known as AC/DC (Adam/Chu Dance Crew), while Miley’s crew is known as M&M (The Mandy & Miley Crew). Seeing as the MandyMiley channel is one of the most popular on YouTube, the dance battle clearly benefits Chu more than Miley, but it’s pretty awesome that Hannah Montana herself is entertaining the dance battle.
It all began with Jon and Adam Sevani throwing down the gauntlet by challenging Mandy and Miley to a dance battle in a video blog, unless they were “scared.” They called out the Disney channel star to the biggest online dance battle in YouTube history. The battle would have no rules and Miley would be able to bring whoever she wanted to join her crew to battle against team AC/DC. After a dance performance that would make You Got Servedjealous, you would think that Mandy and Miley were too good (or too scared?) to respond.
But no, M&M fired right back to the sounds of Madonna’s “Four Minutes” to say “I ain’t neva scared!!” While Mandy and Miley aren’t the focus of the performance, they show some pretty good moves before letting their crew takeover the performance. Though M&M’s crew is more choreographed, it’s tough to say if they beat team AC/DC.
So what did AC/DC do? They fired back AGAIN with the sounds of Busta Rhymes, even taunting cut outs of Hannah Montana and the show’s theme song. Even better for me, they brought two of my favorite hotties Amanda Bynes and Brittany Snow into their crew. Lindsay Lohan, Adam Sandler, America’s Best Dance Crew’s JabbaWockeez, So You Think You Can Dance’s Lacey Schwimmer (hot!!) and Hok Konishi, Diana Ross, and Chris Brown, all make cameos in a YouTube battle that makes Jimmy Kimmel’s “I’m F*cking Matt Damon” look tame in comparison.
Now it’s Miley’s turn. Can she fire back with more star power and more importantly, more moves? Bring it, Miley. This is the best YouTube battle evar.
Two fallen from grace stars, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, will be making their way back into the public, non-paparazzi eye with guest spots on two of television’s most popular shows – Ugly Betty and How I Met Your Mother later this month. While it’s a new role for LiLo on Betty, Brit Brit will be rehashing a role on Mother that was all the buzz just over a month ago.
Has television become a place for celebrity identity therapy? In these cases, I’m actually ok with it.
For Lohan, she’ll be in familiar territory playing a “Mean Girl” from Betty’s past for six episodes. When I heard about LiLo’s appearance on one of my favorite shows, it actually didn’t seem like too far of a stretch. Cameos are pretty common on Betty, even when fictional, so the idea of having Lohan on the show doesn’t really seem like it will take away too much.
I’ve kind of stopped caring about Lindsay Lohan’s star power in a very big way over the past few months (outside of her New York Magazine shoot, of course). But even with her lack of stardom at the moment, it will inject some more life into one of TV’s best shows if done correctly.
On Betty, Lohan will be playing a character from Betty’s past who was once a lot less Cady and a whole lot more Regina. If staying evil, this LiLo could be a perfect potential BFF/partner in crime for one of my favorite characters on television, the hottest receptionist this side of The Office’sPam Beesly, Betty’s Amanda Tanen . However, LiLo’s character is rumored to befriend Betty, so this might be a return to the kinder Lohan that made us all think that she was going to have an acting career that would potential avoid movies like I Know Who Killed Me.
Just the thought of having an evil Lohan pair with Becki Newton on the show actually makes me want to tune in to see if it is as potentially marvelous as I’m envisioning in my mind. It sounds like that won’t happen in the context I’d love to see it, but even just seeing Lindsay Lohan return to some wholesome roots at this point is one of those “I have to see it to believe it” moments as well at this point in LiLo’s rebellious career. Either way, I don’t think Ugly can lose this time.
So ABC, good job. And LiLo, please make this as awesome because it feels like you’re almost running out of Hollywood lives at this point.
Over on the Eye, Brit Brit is back with another tour of on How I Met Your Mother on May 12, as she continues to try and make us forget about Crazy Brit Brit and remember Britney Spears, America’s sweetheart and pop music icon, just a few years ago.
While it’s hard to get the image of one of America’s best known sex symbols of the 21st Century sporting a mullet in a late night self-inflicted head shaving, it’s really nice to see Britney back in the saddle, doing productive things. Is it sad that this seems like a lot to ask for?
The sensationalism that has surrounded her for the past two years of her life would be overwhelming for pretty much anyone, not that Britney really helped any of it, but this is one story that I would like to see end up with a happy ending.
Not only is Britney returning to TV in a role that she surprisingly didn’t get eaten alive for, she also got visitation rights to see her kids at K-Fed’s place. It’s nice to just hear something positive happening with the words “Britney Spears” in the same sentence at this point.Â
Here’s to Hollywood resurrections after celebrity overload!
