Whitney Port Leaving The Hills for The City?
Rumor after rumor said it and now it’s finally happening – Whitney Port is leaving MTV’s The Hills
for a spinoff called The City
– making The City the grandchild of MTV’s Laguna Beach (a spinoff of a spinoff, get it??).
The writing has been on the wall for a while. Whitney’s role on The Hills has decreased significantly due to her demanding job with Kelly Cutrone (at least, that’s what we think). ANDDDDD the USC Kappa Alpha Theta alumna has been spotted all over New York City lately on Gawker Stalker. First, she was just been hanging out, then eventually she started filming something that is apparently now going to be The City.
The new show focused on Whitney’s fast lane career will start airing in early 2009 and The Hills will lose 50% of the funny faces that its characters make over the course of every episode. With all the drama that takes place between Lauren, Lo, Audrina, Heidi, Holly, Spencer, Brody, and Stephanie, it will be sad for the show to lose its one character who remains positive throughout. While Whitney has never played the part of Lauren’s best friend, she’s always been a solid part of the group who seems to give Lauren a supportive ear.
Despite Whitney’s fashion line impressing the powers that be, even more than Lauren’s, I will be shocked if The City carries anywhere near the audience that The Hills does. This feels like a Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice type split. And while The Hills has to be ending one of these days, Whitney is a bit of an unknown on her own. Everyone loves her, but in terms of being a brand, she’s much less of a focus on The Hills than “LC” was on Laguna Beach.
