Lauren Conrad Takes Over Entertainment Weekly and The World
Who would have thought that our beloved LC, Lauren Conrad, from Laguna Beach would have taken over the cover of Entertainment Weekly and given MTV a show that they would dare to call its biggest show ever?
*Raises Hand*
Ever since the first time I sat down for six straight hours to watch Laguna Beach on Joost, Lauren Conrad’s hot, yet girl-next-door with money personality instantly won me over and created an instant bond for viewers with this beautiful girl who happens to live at the top of the beach city (until they sell the house, which I’ve driven by and realize that is a little creepy).
Sure, they threw parties that frienemy Kristin hated and there was some drama for Lauren, but she could do no wrong in our eyes. Nearly all Laguna fans were Team Lauren and it’s tough to really explain why.
Today, The Hills
is MTV’s highest rated show since The Real World: San Diego. Its premiere and finale every season are a major event and the girls – Heidi, Whitney, Lo, Lauren, and Audrina – are household names to pretty much anyone under the age of 21.
Now a millionaire according to Forbes Magazine (find her at #97), besides still being absurdly hot compared to her other good-looking castmates, Lauren Conrad is officially a phenomenon.
With a clothing line, endorsement deals with Mark and AT&T, pending possible book deals, and ambition to start her own production company, Lauren Conrad has found success outside of the reality show bubble to find success in the mainstream.
A lot of people wonder “Why?” The reality of the reality showis that a lot of people really hate The Hills, but many times those who hate it are those who never watched it or haven’t watched but a few episodes.
The answer to the “Why?” in this case is that many viewers have been watching Lauren for six shortened MTV seasons at this point. From her junior year in high school to red carpet stardom, LC has “grown up” along with her viewers and we’ve all be along for the ride.
Because of the nature of reality TV, with its gripping monologues and intense fights, we often develop relationships with these characters that go far beyond what we experience with traditional television.
For Lauren, we saw her lose Stephen Colletti and experienced agony watching her relationship with Jason Wahler, all before we moved to San Francisco with her, saw her come back to LA, miss out on a trip to Paris, lose a best friend, gain two others, all while experiencing a back and forth romance with one of Hollywood’s best known celebutantes – Brody Jenner.
For those reasons and many more are why Entertainment Weekly went as far as to say that Lauren Conrad is like a West Coast version of Sex and The City’s Carrie Bradshaw (if Carrie Bradshaw was a millionaire). Not only is this an interesting assessment, but it’s one that almost applies for a younger generation. Lauren lives the life of a carefree girl in a life filled with drama (like earthquakes) with a constant internal monologue courtesy of the show’s weekly introductions to guide us into her semi-reality.
There are no doubt downsides to being one of the more videotaped people in the television world, with all the gossip about diva-attitudes, sex tape rumors, and spoofs on the show that has made her a worldwide brand – Lauren takes it all in stride.
Carrie Bradshaw once said, “…If you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous,” and Lauren Conrad has found plenty that fit the bill.
Lauren’s public life via The Hills: Season 4 Premieres on Monday, August 18.
