So You Think You Can Dance – Top 20: Chelsie, Joshua, and Twitchington?
Does anyone else think that there are way, way too many contemporary dancers in this season’s Top 20 of So You Think You Can Dance? It’s not that I don’t appreciate the style, but hearing Cat Deeley say “a contemporary dancer from ‘insert city here’ starts to get really old, really fast.
Really, I think it’s a bummer that we’re seeing a lot less variety in this year’s dancers because of the overwhelming number of Top 20’s that are contemporary dancers. Last season, seeing Dominic’s transformation from solo bboy to a diverse dancer who could partner dance was one of the most fun parts of the whole season. This year, for the guys, apart from Joshua, the abrasive/annoying Comfort, and Gev, there are very few dancers that either don’t have experience with partnering or contemporary dance.
After the first night of competition, one of the pleasant surprise couples was Joshua and Katee’s hip-hop routine, who arguably pulled off the second best routine of the night to Jordin Sparks’ and Chris Brown’s “No Air.” While Joseph was in his element, Katee, yet another contemporary dancer, did a more than respectable job hanging with the hip-hopper in their first routine as a couple. The moves were crisp and synchronized portions of the dance were pulled off better than any other couple who had the chance to do so in the Top 20.
While Twitchington (Kherington and Twitch) impressed as well, it was my personal early favorite Chelsie Hightower with her partner Mark who really stole the show with a Mia Michaels’ (wait for it…wait for it…) CONTEMPORARY routine.
This performance reminded me of Lacey’s and Neil’s Mia Michaels performance from last season, but I actually enjoyed it more during the first go around than I did Neil’s/Lacey’s award winning performance.
Considering Chelsie is a ballroom dancer, much like Lacey, her ability to pull off contemporary movements, let alone Mia Michaels contemporary movements, will take her very far in the competition. Her partner Mark appears to be the oddball of this year’s Top 20, but he did extremely well during the first week of competition as well.
Already, Chelsie looks like she’ll consistently outshine Mark, much like Lacey did Kameron last season. The two will likely lack some of the unbelievable chemistry that Lacey/Kameron shared throughout the season, but they’ll hopefully still be able to go far as a couple.
While Courtney Galiano disappointed a bit in her first week with the disco, it’s really tough to compare what they did to what Sara and Neil did last season with the same choreographer.

You do realise it’s Joshua and not Joseph, right? There’s no Joseph in this year’s SYTYCD.
I do agree with the overflow of Contemp dancers. That’s why I never thought they’d boot Jaimie so soon.
They’re good Contemp dancers though.
I like this show a lot!!! But I have to say I really have a passion for America’s Got Talent. It’s starting tomorrow and it’s kind of better than a show where all the people are kind of professional. And there’s more to it then just dancing.
Alright, how lame am I? I woke up this morning to find this really great article about the show in the New York Post (oh, I mean America’s Got Talent, I posted about it yesterday and I just had to find the posting so I could comment on the article). So anyway, it made me really excited to watch the show tonight. Here’s the link to the article (if they’ll let me post it). Simon Cowell says the talent can’t be stopped! http://www.nypost.com/seven/06172008/tv/drag__not_talentsimons_show_better_than__115836.htm
