MySpace Karaoke: The Best and the Worst
MySpace Karaoke launched last week and I finally got around to checking it out today. Since MySpace is a pretty awesome place for music, it just makes sense that the site would be the home for a bunch of randoms to achieve web superstardom via karoake. YouTube has already done it, so why not MySpace?
What was a pleasant surprise is that people can generally hold and tune and most of the songs are pretty listenable so far! I’m actually surprised that former American Idol contestants and semi-professional singer songwriters haven’t taken the place over because I’m pretty sure they would easily pull some ridiculous ratings and popularity.
There’s a lot of good and a lot of bad that will inevitably end up on the world’s biggest social network, so I thought it would be fun to check out some sample offerings from the site. If you’re interested in joining in the karaoke fun, it actually only took a second for me to plug in a microphone, download a very small program, then I was already ready to go! It was surprisingly easy!
Of course, to be fair, I cannot post about MySpace Karaoke unless I post something of myself on MySpace Karaoke. So here is me singing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (as Yoda from Star Wars).
We’re already seeing some MySpace Karaoke stars that have a considerable fan base considering the section of the site has only been up for a week or so. Will we see the next Marie’ Digby emerge from MySpace Karaoke?
Here are the Top 4 singers on MySpace Karaoke at the moment:
1) M(a)eOw!!, who describes herself as a 29 year old bartender, singer, DJ, webmaster. Her songs are some of the most popular on the site already and could she get a big enough following to take her popularity to YouTube and beyond?
2) Chris currently stands as the most popular guy on the site and he also has the coolest MySpace profile. He’s a 23 year old student who apparently attends college at the moment according to his profile. He has good control over his voice and sounds really great! He’s probably the best person that I’ve heard on the site so far. He says that music is his life, so it’s pretty cool that he’s not only good, but maybe people will get to know him from the site.
3) Rokstar is next, who describes his occupation as “I jerk off spiders for nickels”
and he’s interested in “butts and boobs.” I don’t know about the job, but at least he’s honest on the interests. It looks like he has a band called Miles to Empty, which is pretty cool because they’re getting some exposure off him being in the Top 3.
4) ILANGAL, a 35 year old from Florida, rounds out the Top 4. Sadly, her profile is set to private, but she gave a shoutout to all her new fans (”Love u
”) on her status update, which I thought was pretty cool. I didn’t think she was nearly as good as the Top 3, which I suppose makes sense that she’s #4. If the MySpace Karaoke thing is accurate, I’m pretty sure someone will be overtaking her soon.
On the not-so-good, entertainment factor side, we have people like:
- Corey’s take on Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa,” which ends up sounding like the killer from Scream’s rendition of the song after smoking a huge bowl. While the beginning is a little slow, I have to say that Corey’s freestyle flows near the end of the song make this one of the most entertaining tracks on the site right now. The Sacramento native should definitely be recording more tracks.
- Toriii’s take on Leona Lewis’ version of “A Moment Like This.” Toriii admits that it’s “not her best,” but she would have died in Karaoke Revolution before even hitting the first chorus. Not to hate on Toriii, but this reminds me of when you’re standing in church next to someone who is completely tone deaf and you’re really bummed about it.
What about you? Will you be using MySpace Karaoke?
