Gossip Girl is officially in rare, The OC in its prime form after this week’s “All About My Brother.”
No Nate? No Chuck? No problem. This episode was filled with drama to spare.
You know that a television episode has more than enough going on when one of the characters (Serena’s brother Eric) coming out of the closet is not even close to being the focus of the episode. In fact, while Eric’s coming out was much talked about all season, the reality is that it is everything else that has the world outside the upper east side talking.
From Jenny’s now ex-boyfriend Asher turning out to be Eric’s boyfriend, to Blair officially taking over the Queen Bee spot for good by crushing Little J’s social status in a big way, to Serena revealing that she once killed someone, OMFG, Gossip Girl is better than ever.
Though I’m disappointed that evil Little J is leaving us a little sooner than I’d like, the intensity of having both her and Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) be the embodiment of teen evil at once was getting to be a little much. Since Blair is always half-bad (though she’s showing some Summer Roberts-like moments lately), having two more fully bad girls was going to start giving people anxiety attacks.
So rest in peace, evil Little J. Welcome back, Little J that we love.
However, I will definitely miss the battles between Little J and Blair, since they really gave Jenny a new identity on the show. Some of the exchanges between the two were some of the most intense, yet believable scenes that the show has produced in two seasons.
Jenny was a girl desperate to get to the top of the social ladder - so desperate that she would knowingly date a gay socialite to benefit from his social status. While threatened, Blair was someone who had “been there, done that,” and knew that there was a price to pay for her notoriety. Jenny said she’s given up, but something tells me that this doesn’t mean that she’ll be disappearing from Blair’s path forever.
And finally! We’re starting to learn a little bit about the formerly scandalous life of one Serena Van Der Woodsen through Georgina, an evil friend from Serena’s past. What appeared to be a sex tape initially (and still could be), might have been evidence of Serena killing someone years back before she fled New York City to get away from “something.”
Considering that Serena had already deflowered her best friend’s boyfriend, it had to be bigger than that to be such a big secret that she couldn’t tell anyone.
Murder? Yeah, that’s big enough.
Another interesting storyline is coming up with Georgina befriending Serena’s #1 fanboy and boyfriend Dan. Georgina is creating this friendship under an assumed identity, “Sarah.” Not only is Georgina coming between Serena and Dan, but she’s also befriending Dan’s most trusted friend and ex-girlfriend, Vanessa.
While Chuck was off partying it up in Monte Carlo, his step sister-to-be Serena was no doubt dealing with a lot at home. She might be dealing with so much that it looks like Serena experiences a breakdown of sorts in next week’s episode.
Next week will no doubt be intense, but does Gossip Girl ever feel like disappointing at this point? There’s a reason why this show is always one of the most downloaded on iTunes, as every episode gives fans something to talk about and really, it’s fun to have them make so many pop culture references throughout the show that you feel like you have to know all of them to still feel like you’re cool.
For now, I’m hanging in, barely still cool.
Will Serena really cheat on Dan?
Does that give Dan the green light to get with “Sarah?”
Is good girl turned bad Jenny really back to being nice Little J?
Oh yeah, and Eric’s now gay, but this episode was anything but being “All About” Serena’s brother.
