Pop Fiction Fails: Audrina Patridge and Lisa Rinna

Audrina TattoThis week’s Pop Fiction on E! showed that the the well-connected paparazzi seem to have the show figured out.

First, Audrina Patridge got a fake tattoo that loosely translated to “Pork Fried Rice” and was quickly dismissed by most of the major blogs. Much to the chagrin of the show’s producers, the celebrity outlets were right. Instead of Pop Fiction coming out on top, it was the bloggers that made Pop Fiction look stupid, by calling it out before the show had a chance to air.

TMZ and its readers were quick to dismiss a story about Lisa Rinna having an affair, calling it out as Pop Fiction as well. The bloggers are quickly turning on Ashton Kutcher and Pop Fiction

, especially after a story like this, which more than anything really failed because no one in my generation really cares about Lisa Rinna, nor really knows who she is.

I’m sure she’s had a wonderful career, but really, to anyone in their mid 20’s, she’s just some lady who you see at award shows. I think I saw her at a major entertainment event or two, but I was legitimately more excited to see Colbie Caillat at the Grammys, who many people have never heard of, than I ever cared to see Lisa Rinna. For this story of Pop Fiction, Lisa Rinna pulled a total of three paparazzi.

Three paparazzi. Really. Because no one cared about the story.

Pop Fiction is really hurting from the fact that the stories are a little too farfetched and the celebrities are a little too random. In addition, the stories are stale by the time they hit television airwaves and if they don’t continue the story lines past the one day that the hoax is staged, the story will easily be called out as fiction.

What makes this show start to feel like an epic failure after a promising start is how the show pretends that the celebrity news sites are biting on every single one of these stories. Since the show pretends to be savvy to the ways of the online media world, it would be better if Pop Fiction admitted when it “lost” to the paparazzi, to make it feel like more of a competition, instead of a “We always win,” self-praising bundle of lies.

Mariah will be signing CDs in LA on April 17 (not Pop Fiction); I’m trying to get in as press, but if I can’t then I’ll totally go as a fan. You should stop by!
