Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper: A Package Deal?

March 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

ESPN is reporting that free agents Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper have been in talks to reunite on an NFL team in this perfect storm of potential availability. Adding Moss, one of the NFL’s top receiving talents of all time, and Culpepper, a quarterback who has shown so much talent in the past that people refuse to say he’s washed up (though he hasn’t proven much to say otherwise other than brief glimpses), would instantly give any team in the league a chance at making the playoffs.

MossCulpepper Back in the day, Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper (not Cris Carter, too fundamental = not cool) made the Minnesota Vikings one of the coolest teams to jump on the bandwagon for, simply because they were so entertaining. They would make the playoffs, not go to the Super Bowl, but who cares! They were awesome!

Randy Moss was gangsta, spraying referees with water. Daunte Culpepper did that weird “rolling” motion with his arms after he threw bomb after bomb to Moss, who rewarded Culpepper by making some of the sickest catches in the history of the league. Culpepper wore fur coats and Moss did weird things on the sideline like he’s doing in the picture above.

Who cares that they didn’t win the Super Bowl? (probably them) They were of the mold of NBA players like Allen Iverson, Latrell Sprewell, and Jason Williams (the white one). Like the Washington Huskies of the Billy Joe Hobart and Mario Bailey days, Moss and Culpepper made it cool to wear purple. They were so cool that you didn’t even know who played running back for the Vikings when you watched them every week on FOX (and they were on TV that much, because they were so entertaining) because all you cared about was #11 and #84.

Now the two stars (ok one star, and one big ass guy who plays quarterback) are on the NFL free agent market together. They’ve talked about reuniting after all these years and this gives them the rare opportunity to make it happen.

As a fan, while I don’t want to see Moss leave the New England Patriots (and there’s no way anyone dethrones Tom Brady), I would love to see the two guys reunite. It would be like seeing the Road Warriors in some kind of tribute match in the WWE. Seeing Culpepper to Moss for one more season would be like seeing Hawk and Animal do the Doomsday Device on the Ultimate Warrior.

Now, who could use this upgrade…

The Miami Dolphins are probably wishing they didn’t burn that bridge.

The Oakland Raiders? Been there, done that (for both).

The Tennessee Titans are still living and dying with Vince Young’s “passing game.”

The Minnesota Vikings can’t go down that road without looking stupid (though that would be awesome).

The Atlanta Falcons could use the upgrade on Joey Harrington and newly resigned former insurance salesman Chris Redman at quarterback, but even Moss and Culpepper don’t seem like they would go there just to go there.

It’s almost like a fan’s dream to see this happen, but if..

HBK and DieselClyde Drexler could play with Hakeem Olajuwon…

Kobe Bryant could play with Shaquille O’Neal…

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz could bat #3 and #4…

Alex Rodriguez could share an infield with Derek Jeter…

Reggie Bush and LenDale White could share a college backfield (along with Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown)…

And The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels could be a tag team with Big Daddy Cool Diesel (Kevin Nash)…

Anything could happen.

Culpepper doesn’t matter to me at all…but I like the rumors that Moss is talking to Green Bay again (like he did last offseason before talks fell apart).

Moss has a lot of respect for Favre, and if the Packers DON’T do whatever it was they did last year that turned Moss off, and Favre comes back (announce it already, Brett baby!)…maybe we see Moss in Packer green.

    That would make my life.

i love how you acknowledged the weird “rolling” move that Daunte (or, Da Unit) does when he throws TDs. Sometimes, when I’m feeling a beat, i throw out that move.
