American Idol Cuts 4: Joanne, Colton, Amy, Garrett

American Idol Season 7’s Top 24 turned into a Top 20 tonight. America’s votes (or lack thereof) said goodbye to Joanne Borgella, Colton Barry, Amy Davis, and Garrett Haley. I don’t have too much to say about the guys, simply because I didn’t find their performances all that memorable. What I did notice was that Kady Malloy was dressed like Lauren Conrad with her cute headband on and Ramiele cries a LOT…but Kady and Danny Noriega came close as well.

Garrett, all I can say is that you need a new ‘do, bro.

Garrett Haley

For real, dawg.

For the girls, Amy Davis’ elimination proved that America is not as superficial as a city like Los Angeles (or the stereotype of Los Angeles) might lead you to believe. Amy, who resembled Teri Hatcher in a very big way, was one of the better looking girls this season (along with Kady Malloy and Kristy Lee Cook), but really didn’t “bring it” last night. America sent her home by not voting for her and while I was a little surprised at it, it was actually kind of refreshing to see one of the better looking girls go home early, despite the fact we didn’t really get to know her.

The elimination of plus-sized model Joanne Borgella really solidified what I felt like was a really poor Top 24 choice by the judges in its execution. Joanne was the last girl chosen for the Top 24, going up against the prettiest Idol contestant since Katharine McPhee, Cardin McKinney.

Cardin McKinney

Not only was Cardin looking like she was destined to be this season’s hottie, but she had a pretty good voice as well! As soon as I saw Joanne and Cardin as the final two girls, I knew that Cardin was finished.

If the judges chose Cardin, people would be up in arms, saying that “Of course, American Idol is going to choose the hot White girl. Been there, done that.” While Joanne is definitely a good looking girl and has a lot of energy, she was definitely lacking the star quality and radiance (and hotness) that Cardin seemed to have, as she somehow managed to stand out in a huge crowd of girls.

So the judges shocked everyone. They chose Joanne. Unfortunately, one week into the “real” competition, that choice is already gone.

I have no doubt in my mind that Cardin would have made it past the Top 20 had she made it past Hollywood Week, so it definitely bums me out to see Joanne leave so early because it makes me wonder what could have been for the lovely Cardin McKinney.

I’m realizing that I’m starting to type really slow so that I can keep looking at her picture.

Anyways, so we’re now into the Top 20. What did I think was the top performance this week? I’d have to give it to Alaina Whitaker’s “I Love You More.” Her performance absolutely blew away Mr. Attitude (I’m way off the bandwagon) Chikezie’s rendition of the same song to the point that I didn’t even realize they sang the same song until I watched the result show tonight.

Alaina has a ton of control, great stage presence that goes well beyond where Carrie Underwood was at by this point in the competition, and she seems like a fun girl. She’s the youngest in the competition this year and she’s definitely one to look out for.

Do I think the right people left? It was close enough that I can’t really complain about it. There were probably 8 people that I would have been ok with leaving tonight and 4 of them left.
